Genesis, the first book of the Bible, contains the accounts and themes that make up the foundations of our faith. Written by Moses, the man of God, by inspiration and direction of the Holy Ghost, Genesis explains the beginnings of the world, life, man, family, nations, and languages. It gives us the true story of man, which was created to bear the image and glory of God, but has instead fallen into sin and depravity; and it tells us of God's promise to bring redemption and blessing to the sin-cursed world through the seed of Abraham, a man who loved God and was faithful to him. Genesis is filled with God's righteousness, truth, judgment, mercy, and love. It teaches us about such important concepts as atonement, justification by faith, and walking with God. Jesus frequently quoted Genesis and insisted on its importance and relevance; he said, "But if ye believe not [Moses'] writings, how shall ye believe my words?" (John 5:47)
